Record labels say 4G wireless great for music en HD video

Electronista: The next level of mobile broadband could be a tremendous help to both music labels and video operators, companies from both fields have said. Fourth-generation wireless, which should appear in the US primarily through Intel’s WiMAX standard, should drastically lower the costs of downloading media by not only speeding access but taking the burden off of typically cramped cellular networks, which even with third-generation EVDO (…) or HSDPA (…) struggle to handle heavy downloading.

WiMAX is closer to Wi-Fi and pleases labels who could expect to see more income from every track.

Alcatel-Lucent wins French 3G contract

Cellular-News: Alcatel-Lucent has won a contract to supply UMTS network equipment for France’s SFR. Alcatel-Lucent will deploy UMTS/HSPA equipment from September 2007 for the SFR network in France, thus becoming the second 3G supplier for the operator. SFR and Alcatel-Lucent will also form a strategic technologic partnership. This new partnership will allow SFR to have a privileged access to the Alcatel-Lucent worldwide 3G competence center based in France.

SFR is the second mobile operator in France with more than 18 million subscribers. It was the first operator in France to offer 3G services in 2004 and since then, 3G has become its strategic business priority. SFR is today the leader in France in terms of number of 3G subscribers with more than 2.7 million customers and coverage for nearly 65% of the French population.

Microsoft launches messenger on Xbox 360

Yahoo: Microsoft Corp. has announced the launch of Windows Live Messenger on Xbox 360, connecting people across Xbox 360 consoles, Microsoft Windows-based PCs and Windows Mobile-powered devices.

With this update to Xbox 360, people can connect and chat directly from their television using Windows Live Messenger, a network of more than 20 billion relationships and more than 260 million active accounts. (…)

Can the cell phone become a boombox?

Crave: As mobile phones grapple with their identity crisis as MP3 players, handset makers have worked themselves into contortions trying to provide decent sound quality–creating some ugly accessories in the process.The Chinese-made “Super Audio Phone” aims to change all that by building in a speaker that’s much larger than today’s standard sizes in the back of the handset, where a second, smaller LCD screen that provides song titles and other audio information, according to Slashphone. The front looks like a regular phone, with a larger display and buttons.

We have no idea how its music actually sounds, but the idea seems to make a lot of sense, especially considering some of the alternatives.

Stream music on your Bravia

Newlaunches: The latest Digital Media Port accessory from Sony is the TDM-NC1. This cube, when connected to the BRAVIA’s DMP let’s you stream music from your PC straight to your home theater; via the home WiFi network.

The cube features a bright, digital screen that displays the song, artist and other audio information. It is compatible with ATRAC, AAC and WMA music files. It is equipped with ethernet port for wired connection. The WiFi router is not included in the pack. It is also not compatible with all digital music files and DRM protected file playback only from CONNECT Music download service.

Sony’s new DMP- TDM-NC1 is not compatible with Apple computers. It requires PC with Microsoft Windows XP SP2 operating system or newer. Its available for €150.

VW create iGolf for your iPod

Stuff.tv: In what, quite possibly, is the world’s biggest and most expensive iPod accessory, VW has brought out a special edition of its top-selling model.

VW's iGolfNaturally for a German car packing American technology, it’s been announced in, er, Spain where the iGolf comes with an 8GB Nano.

Nano nestles neatly in the iGolf’s armrest, piping tunes direct to the car’s sound system. From what we can tell it all integrates with the head unit too.

TomTom gets Gary Busey as guidance voice

Gizmodo: Many celebrities have loaned their voice to TomTom to use for voice-guided navigation, but none as unique (debatable — Dennis Hopper and Mr. T have also participated) as Gary Busey.

Busey is known for a quite a few interesting “Buseyisms,” like seen in the video that could make the average drive to the lake a lot more interesting.

GPS receiver for your digital camera: great for location tags

Navigadget: Adding location tags to digital images is still a problem. There are many solutions out there but none really streamline the process.

Here is a solution from Tekom. The GX652 is a 6MP digital camera that accepts location info from GX1, a GPS receiver. The GX1 connects to the GX652 using a standard 3.5mm jack and records where each picture was taken to be later uploaded to Google Earth on your PC.
