Blu-ray, HD DVD obsolete in 5 years says Microsoft

AV Zombie: and could be obsolete in just five years. So believes Microsoft’s program manager for Media Entertainment Convergence, Richard Doherty.

Speaking at the annual Digital Hollywood conference in California, he suggested that advances in download and broadband technology could render the current format war moot.

“I don’t know that high definition will be delivered on an optical disc in five to 10 years. At Microsoft, we’d rather HD wasn’t on a disc.”

For the time being however, he added that Microsoft was happy to support HD DVD, principally because it has delivered interactive content in a way that Blu-ray hasn’t.

I’d rather have optical disks in my future than have one of Microsoft’s hands in my pocket and the other firmly wrapped around the movie industry. I see this simply as Microsoft wanting another monopoly.

Again Bill Gates is a lier.
“HD” movies downloaded from internet ARE NOT HD! they are 1.3 Mb/s.
A normal SD DVD is 6Mb/s, and the simple fact that a movie is 1280×720 doesnt mean it’s HD because the compression is so high that you will see LESS detail than your SD TV post can feature.
    SHAME on Microsoft.

Circuit City said DVD would be obsolete in 2008, they are pretty close to on target. Blu-Ray is DOA, why waste more money on another disc format when movies will be available on demand?

The Disc is DEAD. Doesn’t matter what format. Remember VHS? Then there was SUPER-VHS. The Future is digital downloads and movies on chips or jump drives. Check out this link:

This is the future of home entertainment.

In europe we don´t even have a option for full quality SD streaming today. HD streaming is just a pipedream, wake up!

Sure, compressed to hell someone will deliver something they call “HD”, but it will be nowhere near full HD quality.

Try streaming at 25mB/s for full Bluray quality. It won´t be available anytime in the near future. That is the reality.

Microsoft is just a bad looser in the HD-war. I bet they cry every night wishing they´d gone with Bluray instead, this is just a reaction from them.
