Garmin confirms its acquisition of Navigon is complete

Engadget: Mergers and acquisitions can sometimes take some unexpected turns, but that’s not the case with Garmin’s purchase of former rival Navigon. The company said last month that the acquisition would be complete by “late July” and now, on July 26th, it’s announced that the deal is in fact done. There’s still no financial details being disclosed, but execs from both companies are expectedly tossing around words like “excited” and “pleased,” and they’re promising plenty of integration and new opportunities going forward. Obviously, they’re betting they’ll be better as partners than rivals in the face of mounting challenges.

ArtStation Pro a stylized iPad dock and speaker combo

Electronista: With a swivel arm that mounts the iPad and a wireless infrared remote that clips magnetically to the back of the device, iLuv’s new iPad docking and audio station — the iMM514, otherwise known as the ArtStation Pro – has clearly taken some design cues from Apple’s iMac G4 and G5 computers of the mid-2000s. The positionable arm turns the unit into a home entertainment center or a desktop mount for more serious iPad use. (more…)

Libratone’s AirPlay-enabled soundbars want to cozy up with your iOS wares

Engadget: Been on the prowl for an audio solution with AirPlay to compliment your iDevice or Apple TV? Bid hello to Libratone’s ultra-chic Lounge and Live soundbars. Last year, the company introduced its eye-catchingBeat wireless speaker system back at IFA; we were intrigued by its active drivers and carry handle, but mildly disappointed that cord-cutting required pesky proprietary adapters. Apple users will be happy to know AirPlay’s been fully embraced this time, along with the signature adornment of cashmere wool. (more…)

LG promises 55-inch OLED TV in 2012, just in time for the next b’ak’tun

Engadget: LG is apparently tired of this tiny OLED stuff. 15-inch TVs and 4-inch cellphones? What is this, 2009? The company has decided it’s time to super-size the organically-powered panels and plans to introduce a 55-inch HDTV in mid 2012. We’ve got faith it can deliver too — last summer the Korean manufacturer was showing off a 31-inch model (above) and it sounds like it’s shifting focus completely towards larger sizes. CEO Kwon Young-soo has said that IPS technology is much better suited for the mobile space. Of course, LG has promised impressively-sized panels before and, even if such a set does make it to market, chances are you’ll have to take out a second mortgage to afford one.

Ideum’s MT-55 ‘Platform’ multitouch table goes ultrathin, demands but $18,000

Engadget: It’s been a hot minute since we’ve heard from the fine folks at Ideum, but when the image above floated into our inbox… well, it’s safe to say our interest was piqued. We last heard from these guys back in the fall of 2009, and while The Platform is certainly a bit smaller than the 100-inch MT-50 that came before it, it’s also a heck of a lot more practical for average consumers.
