Epson’s tiny GPS receiver will make everything location aware

Engadget: Small, right? That’s Epson’s Infineon XPOSYS chip, its next generation Assisted-GPS device set for mass production in late 2009.

The chip measures just 2.8 x 2.9-mm making it 25% smaller than other A-GPS chips on the market, according to Epson, while consuming half the power.

The sensitivity has also been improved for a more accurate location fix while indoors.

E112 and A-GPS will revive the LBS platform and middleware market

Wireless Developer Network: According to a new report from the telecom analyst firm Berg Insight, the market for LBS platforms and middleware in Europe will return to growth in the coming years, with demand driven by E112 requirements and increasing adoption of A-GPS.

Annual revenues in Europe for mobile location platforms, including A-GPS servers and middleware platforms, are projected to grow from about € 17 million in 2008 to € 34 million in 2014.

“The latest wave of innovative smartphones has stimulated consumer interest in advanced mobile applications, which are increasingly location-enabled”, said André Malm, Senior Analyst, Berg Insight.

“Mobile operators are now responding by investing in network-based location technologies and new services. Particularly A-GPS will become very important as the installed base of GPS-enabled handsets in Europe is projected to reach 270 million devices in 2014.”

Nokia 6650 available exclusively on T-Mobile

Camera Core: T-Mobile International is to be the exclusive carrier for Nokia’s new 6650 smartphone. The phone will be available in the third quarter, it was announced at the CeBIT tradeshow in Hanover, Germany.T-Mobile is expected to offer the Nokia 6650 for 1 euro to customers in Germany who sign up for its Relax 100 rate.

The Nokia 6650 clamshell phone features assisted GPS (A-GPS), which provides more reliable location information than conventional GPS when the signal is weak.

Multimedia player functions are included, allowing access to T-Mobile services including Web’n’walk, MyFaves, Mobile Jukebox, and NaviGate.

The 6650 also features an interface for High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA), which offers 1.4-Mbps downloads, with a theoretical upper limit of 7.2 Mbps.

The phone also has a 2.2-inch TFT QVGA colour display, a 2-megapixel camera with flash, 30 MB of internal memory, a MicroSD card slot, FM radio, and Bluetooth connectivity.

worlds first 3.5G GPS/AGPS modem

NaviGadget: Taiwan’s Gigabyte is claiming they have the world’s first 3.5G GPS/AGPS wireless modem which they are displaying at CeBIT, Germany.Called MD800, this card is the successor to the one in Gsmart MS820 GPS PDA phone which features a motion sensor and the company’s own GUI. The data card offers a choice of three interfaces, Express card, mini USB, and PCMCIA in addition to its 3.5G networks capability and also support for GPS and A-GPS.

At CeBIT again, the company will be introducing the MS808 PDA phone which is claimed to be the world’s first 3.5G mobile phone supporting four different mobile TV standards, DVB-T, DVB-H, T-DMB, and ISDB-T as well as GPS too.

CSR’s eGPS claims it is better than A-GPS

NaviGadget: UK’s CSR just announced that have integrated GPS with cellular measurements to create eGPS – enhanced Global Positioning System – technology capable of providing position information on demand in all environments. We’re not exactly quite sure how eGPS works just yet but the press release claims it has better TTFF than A-GPS and less power consuming.

“A comparative demo against conventional A-GPS systems shows greatly improved time to first fix (TTFF) in difficult environments and a reliable fallback position based on cellular measurements when A-GPS fails. CSR’s Bluetooth silicon with embedded support for eGPS allows satellite measurements to be maintained when the host processor is powered down, providing position information on demand while minimising power and resource loads.”

NaviGadget: Samsung i780 follows the design of i600 and it will be a top of the line product integrating the 3G, HSDPA, GPS and Wi-Fi. The main features of this device include a full keyboard, a screen with 320×320 pixels resolution, Windows Mobile 6 Pro OS, as well as a mouse which gets rid of the stylus making it operable with only one hand.Hardware specs:

Nokia N95 A-GPS available with new firmware

NaviGadget: Nokia after hearing a few bad things about the GPS performance on the N95 decided to include A-GPS support with its new V12 firmware. With the new A-GPS support, your N95 will connect to the assistance server operated by Nokia which in return send back the up-to-date ephemeris data of the GPS constellation and help decrease the time it takes to get a satellite fix where GPS signals are poor even in places with no direct view of the sky.
