Sony FED yet another technology for TV

Newlaunches: CRT, LCD, PDP, DLP, LCoS, OLED, SED these are technologies available on the buffet menu today. But if Sony has its way the new curry to delight all will be the FED technology. (…)

To show off their point, Sony recently displayed a new 19.2-inch 1280 × 960 pixel, 400cd/m2 panel demonstrating the technology, with an impressive 20,000:1 contrast. With lesser power consumption and a super-thin frame, the new TV will have all that it takes to woo the customer. (…)

Question of the week: what does “contrast ratio” mean?

About: Contrast ratio is the difference between the brightest whites and the blackest blacks that a television or video projector can display. High contrast ratios deliver whiter whites and blacker blacks and a greater degree of gray values in between. If the contrast ratio is low, even if the image is bright, your image will look washed out.
Contrast ratios of at least 1,500:1 are good, but 2,000:1 or higher is considered excellent.

New “Cannes” plasma TV from Samsung

HDTV UK: Samsung has presented its new “Cannes” plasma TV, which it says utilises the company’s exclusive technologies such as “Ultra Daylight”, “Natural True Colour”, and “Real Motion Studio”.

Ultra Daylight technology seems to allow for variation in contrast ratio, between 1,000:1 for a bright room and 15,000:1 for a dark room.

Natural True Colour, unsurprisingly, improves colour reproduction. Red, green and blue colour can be processed in 18-bit.

Real Motion Studio gives a clearer image by eliminating the blurring of outlines and text.

Suggested (equivalent) prices at present are around £1,100 (€1,600) for the 42-inch, £1,800 (€2,600) for the 50-inch, and £4,900 (€7,200) for the full HD model.

Sony OLED closes in on LCD TV

AV zombie: OLED (organic light-emitting diode) screens are beginning to convince as potential alternatives to LCD, although even their biggest advocates admit there’s a long way to go before they become a commercial proposition.

OLED

Sony recently used the CES expo to show this 27-inch 1920 x1080 resolution OLED prototype (pictured) which boasts a 1 million-to-one contrast ratio. However engineers confirmed that they have yet to solve problems associated with a short screen life.
Super-slim OLED panels dim and die far earlier than conventional flatscreen technologies.

New ‘Bordeaux’ LCD TVs from Samsung

NewLaunches.com: Samsung has some more LCD screens with the ‘prime’ feature of a 10000:1 contrast ratio out.

This time it comes under the label “Bordeaux”. These displays also boast a trio of HDMI ports to go with them (one in front and two at the back).

Pioneer Plasma display technology boasts “immeasurable” contrast ratios

Gizmodo: Pioneer has overhauled their plasma display technology by recreating and re-engineering the panel, color filter and ASIC video processor in the plasma. The new technology will provide deeper blacks, richer color and better contrast. So good, in fact, that Pioneer says it cannot be measured.
Hmm…. This new plasma technology will be hitting the U.S. market this summer. It likely won’t be cheap, either, as Pioneer said that they did not set out to make the largest or cheapest plasma display, but the best quality.
Supposedly the picture quality from this new and improved Pioneer plasma is better than the missing-in-action SED and latest LCD technologies. Pioneer will be having a side by side comparison at their booth.

Pioneer plasma with 20,000:1 contrast ratio

EngadgetHD: Not to be outdone by recent reports of LCD’s 10,000:1 nor SED’s 50,000:1 contrast ratios, Pioneer has fired back with a 60-inch plasma featuring a 20,000:1 contrast ratio.

The pictures below demonstrate; Pioneer’s new screen on the left compared with a ‘standard’ 3,000:1 contrast level on the right.

Blacker blacks are important, and there is a clear difference.  Their new plasma seems to let you see it all: video from zero black to 100-white, color from infrared to ultraviolet, and resolution only a microscope could discern. Even if the difference is academic, it’s still there.

The screen was unveiled at last week’s Ceatex show in Japan.  Pioneer hopes to have this plasma on the shelves in time for the Beijing Olympics.
