I’m a Navman: the hot new S100

Shiny Shiny: Sat Navs don’t really generate the most enthusiasm and excitement, but it’s not their fault, they do try. That may all be about to change with Navman’s rather stylish S100 – the latest addition to the S-series.

The S100 is rather nice on the eye with its slim  brushed aluminium shell with as much robustness as you’d need for something you’re going to be using on a regular basis whether you’re driving or walking to your destination. Its flat screen gives it a bit of a TV feel and at 4.3-inches it’s a decent size to navigate on.

To add to its appeal, Navman has added a few new features to the device. Clear view mapping is one of them. The idea behind this is to avoid bewilderment by emphasizing your journey on screen, so the focus remains on your journey rather than the surrounding roads. The inclusion of glide touch, an iPhone-esque way of navigating through the S100 definitely gives it added appeal.

3 new GPS navigation systems from Medion

Navigadget: German brand Medion announced 3 new GPS navigation systems recently: P5235, P5435 and X5535.

The main feature of these is the very big screen that measures 5 inches compared to the highly common ‘large screen’s that only measure about 4.3 inches. However the resolution is always of 272×480 pixels (WQVGA).

These 3 Medion sat navs have the same design but differ in featuers. They all integrate a RDS/TMC receiver, but the Premium service is in optional on P5235 and standard with P5435 and X5535.

They all have an FM transmitter to send navigation directions or MP3 audio to your car’s sounds system. P5435 and X5535 also integrate a handsfree bluetooth kit. A biometric reader is also integrated to make your GPS safer.

X5535 is the most advanced out of the three since it has a gyroscope to simulate a position fix in the event of a loss of satellite signal.

Becker launches Crocodile, Berlin GPS units

Electronista: GPS device maker Becker provided full details of two GPS units that have been part of its demo at the IFA technology show.

The Crocodile earns its name through a tire-tread like rubber housing that protects it against impacts, improves its water resistance and also makes for better grip. Motorcycle riders in particular should find it useful versus more fragile units, Becker argues.

The 4.3-inch widescreen navigator also promises route plotting and has a 3D mode that covers both landmarks and terrain details in the extra dimension.

The Z 201 Berlin provides the same navigation features as the Crocodile but drops the extra-rugged exterior for a smaller but more fragile exterior designed for cars.

This Minority Report-like wristband concept packs a portable GPS system and music player all in one–though given how power-hungry GPS units are, you might not want to drain that battery pack tuning in to Coldplay or Madonna.

No idea, either, on how this juices up. But we do know the Seek offers directional guides and location-based services accessed via its interactive touch screen.
