HTC doubles G1 Android shipments

Techradar: HTC has apparently doubled its projected shipments of the T-Mobile G1 handset after demand for the device has soared to unprecedented levels.

The company now thinks it can shift a million of the new mobile phone by the end of 2009, outstripping a huge amount of its more powerful rivals’ releases by some margin.

Earlier projections of 400,000-600,000 from analysts have now been quashed, so Google must be feeling pretty content at the moment with its first effort.

Although it has only been available in the wild for a month so far, the imminent sales in countries such as the Netherlands, Austria and Germany will help drive demand even further.

More than 600,000 G1 Android smartphones sold by end 2008 says HTC

ITProPortal: HTC has painted an optimistic picture regarding sales of its T-Mobile G1 handsets by claiming that it will manage to sell more than 600,000 such handsets before the year end.

In an interview given to Mercury News, Peter Chou, the CEO of HTC predicted that it will be selling much more than it has originally planned and also expressed the hope that the market for smartphones will increase at an appreciable rate.

If predictions made by Chou are to hold true then the G1 will possibly become the best selling handset from HTC till date and will sure give the Apple iPhone a run for its money.

In a related statement Chou also dismissed speculations regarding its giving a lower preference to Windows Mobile owing to the use of Google’s Android in the G1 handset by saying “Of course we are not de-prioritising Windows Mobile by any means. However, with Android we can do more.”

1.5 million G1s sold on pre-order

IntoMobile: Android’s first phone, the G1 on T-Mobile, was originally pitched to sell around 400,000 units before the year was done.

Based on some fresh orders to manufacturer HTC, apparently the G1 has already reached 1.5 million sales in pre-orders alone, with lots more on the way once it hits shelves on October 22nd.

The hardware design has left a lot of folks unimpressed (after all, the thing hasn’t changed in about two and a half years), but the massively open source nature of the project will bait in a lot of developers and give the G1 plenty of software fighting juice to run on.

Android and Windows Mobile ‘complementary’, claims HTC

According to a report by DigiTimes, John Wang, Chief Marketing Officer at HTC, said that both systems have their merits, and so handsets based on either platform will appeal to different users.

For example, he said, Windows Mobile offers high performance, interoperability and a large library of applications. Android is more flexible because of its open source architecture.

Google unveil G1 Android mobile phone to rival Apple iPhone

Telegraph.co.uk: Google has unveiled its first ever mobile phone, which the company hopes will rival the Apple iPhone. In the UK, Google’s G1 phone is available on T-Mobile. The G1 phone runs Android, an operating system that is designed to bring the desktop computing experience to mobile devices, by allowing people to surf the internet and carry out everyday tasks on the move.

The G1 gives one-touch access to popular Google online services, such as its email service, Gmail, the video-sharing website YouTube, instant-messaging via Google Talk, and its maps service, Google Maps. Users can instantly share photos taken on the three megapixel camera, and post them to the web.

The G1 is the first phone to have a compass built into it in addition to motion-sensing technology, meaning users can navigate using Google Maps just by rotating the phone in their hand. The phone has a 3.2in touchscreen as well as a slide-out Qwerty keyboard. It offers high-speed internet access via the 3G phone network, as well as via Wi-Fi.

The G1, which is made by HTC, comes with 2GB of memory built into the device, which is enough to store up to 500 songs, but this can be expanded to 8GB using an additional memory card.
