iHome details its AirPlay-focused iW1 speaker

iPodNN: iHome today explained some of the workings of its upcoming AirPlay speaker. Now called the iW1, the audio system will primarily stream from an iTunes computer to the speaker and should mostly use an iOS 4.2 device as a remote, although the feature should theoretically allow direct-from-device streaming. The hardware will allow a Sonos-like multi-room audio system with the option of piping audio to every iW1 on the local network or just individual units.

Most other details are refinements of what was teased after the iW1 was first shown in September. Audio quality should be a focus with both class-D amplifiers as well as Bongiovi Acoustics tuning for the pairs of tweeters and woofers. A row of capacitive touch buttons on top will provide basic physical controls, and iPhone or iPod owners will have the option of charging directly from a USB port on the back.

iHome hasn’t yet given an estimated battery life for the lithium-ion pack in the iW1 other than “hours,” but it did mention that the speaker will support the native iOS app for setting up and delivering firmware updates.

Release dates, prices and other launch details still aren’t known for the wireless audio system, though its release hinges on iOS 4.2′s posting, which could come by Friday.

iHome puts out first iPad clock radio dock

iPodNN: iHome has introduced what is the first fully functional iPad dock with the iHome iA100ZE. It can also accommodate iPhones and iPods, and gets a Bluetooth connection in addition to an FM radio. The dock includes a free download of the iHome+Sleep app (currently not iPad-optimized, App Store) that offers custom alarms, sleep stats, social media alerts, weather, and overnight news.

The alarm settings from the dock are automatically synced to the iPad. Another button syncs the proper time from an iPhone to the dock. The dock has Bongiovi Digital Power Station circuitry that purportedly optimizes the sound for digital audio formats as well as iHome’s newer Reson8 speaker chambers.

iHome has not revealed prices or a release date for the iA100ZE dock.

Let there be light, and music

The Register: Some people claim music lightens a gloomy mood, but the iHome iPod docking station lamp is guaranteed to shed some light on the subject – literally.

The iHome is an iPod docking station at heart, but a desktop lamp also sprouts out of the dock’s top to help illuminate your iPod, working area or, just maybe, your mood.

Several styles of iHome are available, but each docks most iPod models, including the Nano and Mini. The music player is also charged whilst sat in the dock.

iHome prepares iH82 stereo iPod speakers

Electronista: Accessory maker iHome has developed the iH82, a new set of portable speakers for the iPod. Based on the existing iH80, the base of the unit is essentially the same, but with an entirely optional second speaker for louder, stereo sound. Crucially, the extra speaker does not require its own power supply; it instead takes its power from the dock speaker, which uses a wall adapter or eight C-cell batteries. The dock itself supports fourth- and fifth-generation iPods along with minis, nanos and shuffles. An infrared remote comes standard.
