iPod classic, nano updated to 1.0.2

MacNN: Apple on Saturday quietly released version 1.0.2 updates for both the iPod classic and third-generation iPod nano. The new updates address “bug fixes,” according to the company. In testing after applying the update, there has been discovered that the firmware upgrade primarily affects Cover Flow behavior and performance, improving its similarity to the experience found within iTunes 7.4.

The update also adds a third “Ask” option to the TV output category that lets users selectively turn on TV mode when attached to an authorized video-capable peripheral. Users have also reported better calendar and contact syncing. Both updates can be applied by launching iTunes with a compatible iPod attached and choosing “Check for Update.”

iPod Classic – Plagued with sound quality issues?

Slashgear: What’s up with QA over at Apple these days? The iPhone was plagued with battery issues when it was launched, the iPod Touch has difficulty displaying dark colors, and now people are reporting that the iPod classic has poor audio output.

Some people might call the latest complaints a bit picky. However, for those that have an ear for music, some minor quality issues can drive you to a different product. One such person was upset by this and decided to run a series of tests to confirm that he wasn’t crazy. His tests showed that the the iPod the following issues:
A slight uplift in treble.
A group delay that depends on frequency.
A strong modulation with 22.1k, causing intermodulation distortion.
These issues are likely caused by Apple’s decision to switch to a Cirrus Logic audio codec chip. Luckily for most of us, the quality issues are barely noticeable.

MacNN: Marware has released four new cases for Apple’s latest iPod series, available for immediate purchase from Marware’s website. The new iPod nano cases include the Sport Grip, the Sportsuit Runabout — a neoprene wrist case – , the Sportsuit Convertible — which allows you to wear your iPod on your arm, your hand, attach it to a belt or shoulder strap, or carry it as a stand-alone case in your pocket or bag.

The company also announced a variety of soft and hard cases for the new iPod classic.
