Electronista: New quarterly data indicates little change in the US cellphone market, according to research firm ComScore. Android devices continue to dominate as a platform, up 0.8 percent to account for 50.9 percent of smartphones. Apple’s iPhone, meanwhile, has grown 1.7 percent to claim a 31.9 percent share. (more…)

Gizmodo: The televisions that are going to be invading our living rooms in 2012, the ones that Samsung and LG and the rest have been trotting out this week at CES? They’re the most exciting gadgets of the year, and not because of any apps or gimmicks or third dimensions being shoved down our throats. In fact, they’re wonderful in spite of all that. (more…)

Electronista: The just-revealed 2012 CES Innovations Awards gave us a glimpse of what to expect from LG at this year’s CES show. They include three new HDTVs, including the 55-inch Cinema 3D TV 55LM9600, with the company’s Nano Full LED backlighting and a major visual redesign. There is also a Cinema 3D 55LM8600 set that should be identical, but forego the advanced LED tech. Both have LG’s thinnest bezel. (more…)

Techwatch: The IFA show took place over the last week in Berlin, as you’ve probably noticed from the flurry of TechWatch news stories relating to the event.
But for those of you who’ve missed some (or all) of our coverage, or indeed the articles splashed liberally around other tech sites, here’s a quick round-up of the hot topics at this year’s IFA. (more…)

Engadget: Challenging Sony’s PlayStation 3D display, LG’s new LW980T “Dual Play” TV lets Xbox users see two different views on the same screen — ditching the standard split gaming view. Spotted this week at IFA, the technology requires a pair of snazzy all-right / all-left passive specs and a compatible 3D Xbox game to get two different 2D perspectives on one TV. (more…)

Engadget: LG is apparently tired of this tiny OLED stuff. 15-inch TVs and 4-inch cellphones? What is this, 2009? The company has decided it’s time to super-size the organically-powered panels and plans to introduce a 55-inch HDTV in mid 2012. We’ve got faith it can deliver too — last summer the Korean manufacturer was showing off a 31-inch model (above) and it sounds like it’s shifting focus completely towards larger sizes. CEO Kwon Young-soo has said that IPS technology is much better suited for the mobile space. Of course, LG has promised impressively-sized panels before and, even if such a set does make it to market, chances are you’ll have to take out a second mortgage to afford one.

Gizmag: While LG might be best known for its consumer electronics products, the South Korean conglomerate has plenty of strings to its bow with around 40 subsidiary companies in areas including electronics, telecommunications and chemicals. One such subsidiary is LG Hausys, which is Korea’s biggest building and decorative material company. Its products include a solid surface material called HI-MACS and to demonstrate the “limitless design possibilities” of the material, LG Hausys teamed up with Korean architect Shi-hyung Jeon to create Horn, a hand-made iPod speaker dock featuring the smooth, curved shape from which it gets its name.LG Hausys says its HI-MACS material is the optimum choice for a speaker cabinet due to its non-porous features and to the minimal vibrations that the material generates in contact with the speakers. These properties help drive the vibration of the speaker enclosure with a minimal diffraction of sound that is directed outwards via the Horn’s sweeping curves. Aesthetically, these curves are designed to reflect the line of the sleeve of traditional “Han-bok” and “Beo-seon” Korean clothes.
The unit includes eight three-inch full range drivers providing a frequency range of 47 Hz to 20 KHz with an amplifier output of 2 x 25 W. An iPod or iPhone connects to the speakers via a 30-pin connector on the top surface of the unit, which stands 1,312 mm (51.6 in) tall, 600 mm (23.6 in) wide and 395 mm (15.5 in) deep.
While LG Hausys says the Horn serves up a “stunningly clear, precise listening experience that today’s audiophiles are looking for,” the chance of said audiophiles getting to discover this for themselves seems remote as the Horn is currently just a design concept.

TechRadar: LG has decided to beat the January tech crowds and give everyone a peek at what it will be showing off at CES 2011.
This week the Korean company announced that it will be offering what it is calling a ‘superior’ range of 3D AV goodies.
First up is the HX996TS home theatre system. Boasting sound that is “as deep and lifelike as any 3D image,” the system includes something called the Vertical 3D Effect Channel, which blasts out sound from the top of the included Tallboy Speakers.
This brings 7.1 sound but without the messy job of putting up brackets in your home to hold the top speakers.
Connected player
LG will also show off the HB906SB Blu-ray player at CES 2011. This is another home cinema system that has 1,100 watts of output and uses LG’s new Digital Signal Processing to iron out the sound waves.
The HX996TS and HB906SB both utilise Wi-Fi, have an iPod dock cradle and USB support.
LG will also be launching the BD690, a network Blu-ray 3D player that boasts Smart TV Technology, access to the LG App Store and Wi-Fi Direct compatibility – which is a first in the market.
The LG BD690 is an update to LG’s current BD390 range.
UK release date and pricing details are to be announced but expect more information when CES 2011 begins 5 January.
