IFA 2010: Samsung Galaxy Tab and Loewe 3DTV

T3: We give you all the latest IFA news from 3DTVs to the latest smartphones in this special edition of the News@8.

Samsung releases Galaxy Tab: The hype has finally ended as the Samsung Galaxy Tab was unveiled this morning at IFA. All eyes were on the stage as Samsung ran the press through the Tab’s many (already leaked) features, for the full experience check out T3’s hands-on images. Next on its agenda was the Samsung UN65C8000 the world’s largest 3D LEDTV which was also released today boasting a near £5000 price tag. Ouch. Finally Samsung have also released its HD HMX-T10 1080p camcorder with a 20-degree lens angle which is designed to making shooting that glorious HD footage less strenuous.

Philips gives customers the ‘cinema’ experience: Philips today announced its Cinema 21:9 Platinum 3D TV, which although having a very long name, is actually incredibly cool. Boasting a cinema-esque 21:9 aspect ratio and Full HD 3D this TV was the flagship among Philips many 3D releases of the day.

Loewe enters the 3D market: German company Loewe has unveiled its 3D concept TV at IFA, and what a concept it is. Looking quite simply like a piece of high art rather than a LED HD 3DTV the concept was just one of three new products launched by Loewe.

Sharp adds a pixel to 3D: Sharp’s HD Quattron series has been given the 3D treatment in the form of their first 3D HDTV the Sharp 3D Quattron TV. Utilising an extra yellow pixel Sharp is able to make images seem brighter and clearer, which can only be a good thing in terms of 3D. We like.

Toshiba launches iPad rival: Toshiba has released the Folio 100 Tablet which it hopes will give it a firm stake in the tablet market. Running Android 2.2 and measuring 10.1 inches the Folio is larger than the other Tablet rival the Samsung Galaxy Tab. Toshiba has also released another first for the company in the form of the REGZA WL 3D series; its first 3D HD LEDTV. REGZA series also now includes the VL range which is a high-end HD LED range based around the WL 3D TV’s but without 3D compatability, instead aiming for high spec 1080p display quality.

Loewe plans push into UK market

Wired: ‘In difficult times, it’s good to prepare for better times,’ says Frieder C. Löhrer, Loewe’s chief executive. His company seems to have taken this attitude to heart, expanding its network of premium TV stores across the UK at a time when the green shoots of recovery are barely out of the ground.

This autumn Loewe plans to open six new stores, moving out of London into Manchester, Sheffield, the Lake District and beyond.

The company’s home market, Germany, remains its most profitable, but Loewe believes that the UK, Europe’s biggest TV market, is a natural home for its high-end, design-led TVs.

In particular, they have their eyes on the upcoming Olympics as a driver of demand for high quality sound and picture, not only for home viewers but also for designer and boutique hotels.

Loewe push into UK

Loewe is very much the Apple of the TV world, offering status-symbol sets at considerably higher prices than the competition. The designs are minimalistic – all smooth edges and hidden buttons and cables. The aim, the company says, is that TVs shouls be as attractive from the back as they are from the front, so they can be placed in the middle of a room.

Features range from the practical to the plain extravagant: a light sensor measures the ambient light of the room and dims the screen to suit, for example, or you can buy (expensive) matching furniture specially designed to fit with your TV.

So how does this high-end company see the future of TV? It shares the view of other manufacturers that 3DTV is not on the immediate horizon, and that hybrid internet TVs are likely to be the next development. From next year, the company’s products will include an internet browser, and the YouTube function already found on some models will be upgraded to YouTube XL.

They are also considering implementing the BBC’s iPlayer, although this may depend on the company’s success in the UK. There are no immediate plans to introduce OLED screens, although engineers are working on it for future models.

Loewe introduces the Individual Selection TV range

T3: Are you worried that your TV doesn’t quite fit in with your bold feature wallpaper? Thought not, but just in case you or your partner go all ‘Changing Rooms’ or ’60 Minute Makeover’ in the future, there’s a TV that can change with your mood, the Loewe Individual Selection TV range.

It’s still the same high-end Loewe full HD 100Hz LCD TV, sized from 32 inches upwards and offering 24p motion picture display, an optional DR+ hard disk recorder and Assist+ control, which allows you to operate everything from one remote.

But for devotees of interiors magazines, that might not be quite enough. So as well as all the tech, Loewe also offers up a choice of nine different coloured side inlay panels, including Ruby Red, Apple Green, High Gloss Black or Light Oak and a choice of either aluminium or High Gloss White housing colours.

So as the new wallpaper goes up, so can the matching TV panel. If you’ve gone for the matching Loewe speakers too, don’t worry, they’ll colour change too and there’s also a choice of five stands to pick from, should your attention to detail become ever so slightly obsessive.

No news on price, but when talking Loewe, you can usually double the starting price against your regular high street TV. If you’ve got that kind of money to play with, check the Loewe site for your nearest dealer.

Loewe sticking with LCD, will have Blu-ray built in by 2010

Electricpig: German engineering maestro Loewe was promoting its new chain of Gallery shops in the UK and we took the chance to talk to the company’s CEO, Frieder Löhrer, on his plans for the future.

Currently, all of Loewe’s line use LCD screens, so we asked him if there were plans to make use of OLED, as Sony has in its recent XEL-1 TV, but Löhrer was reticent, only stating that “we watch all the techniques that are on the market, almost on a daily basis. We believe that in 2-3 years, this technique could become part of the future.”

Löhrer was much more optimistic though when we quizzed him on the prospect of Blu-ray built into Loewe’s boxes. “I cannot say no,” he said. “Its a technique that we forsee not for the year 2008, but I would assume for early 2010.”

Loewe selects NXP to power full-HD LCD TVs

MarketWatch: European TV manufacturer Loewe has chosen the flagship video postprocessor from NXP Semiconductors, PNX5100 to deliver full-HD picture quality on its latest 37-inch and 40-inch LCD TV line-up — the Spheros R37 Full HD+ 100, the Individual 40 Selection Full HD+ 100 and the Individual 40 Compose Full HD+ 100.

The 100Hz flat panels from Loewe will draw on NXP’s Motion Accurate Picture Processing (MAPP) technology and full motion compensated up-conversion to reduce contour blurring and halos for brilliant 1920×1080 high-definition (HD) images.

Roland Bohl, director for R&D at Loewe, said: “As the HD LCD TV market matures and consumers demand progressive improvements in their viewing experience, the ability to up-convert and deliver life-like picture quality will be a key differentiator for Loewe. Having evaluated a number of video processors on the market, we found NXP to offer the right platform for up-conversion to realize our philosophy of image enhancement.”
