Nokia previews N97 touch-screen mobile for net users

Guardian: Nokia says it has unveiled “the world’s most advanced mobile computer, which will transform the way people connect to the Internet and to each other.”

The N97 has a 640 x 360 pixel 3.5 inch touch screen and a slide-out qwerty keyboard. As expected, it runs Symbian S60, and is Ovi- and N-Gage-compatible.

The N97′s key innovation is the introduction of So-Lo. Nokia says: “The Nokia N97 introduces the concept of ‘social location’. With integrated A-GPS sensors and an electronic compass, the Nokia N97 mobile computer intuitively understands where it is”.

N96 is Nokia’s new flagship smartphone

Phonemag.com: Nokia have officially announced the N96 smartphone.  An update to the popular N95, over 7 million of which were sold, the N96 adopts the manufacturer’s current high-gloss style while updating the long spec-list that prompted so much interest in its predecessor.

Quadband GSM & HSDPA(WCDMA/HSDPA 900/2100, EGSM 900, GSM/EGPRS 850/1800/1900 MHz) together with WiFi b/g, Bluetooth 2.0 EDR and GPS are joined by Assisted-GPS for improved accuracy and, in certain markets, a DVB-H mobile TV receiver.

A 5-megapixel autofocus camera with Carl Zeiss optics and dual-LED camera flash (which does double duty as a video light) can capture images up to 2592 x 1944 and MPEG-4 VGA video footage at 30fps.  These can be geotagged, stored and organised on the N96’s 16GB of internal memory (which can be augmented with a microSD card), uploaded to online galleries such as Flickr or Nokia’s Ovi service, or streamed to a computer or compatible TV using a TV-out cable or wireless UPnP.

Nokia Maps 2.0 features strongly on the N96, offering navigation and multimedia city guides as well as user-downloadable maps and satellite imagery.  Options are available for voice-guided car navigation or pedestrian-optimised turn-by-turn instructions.

The Nokia N82 gets formally announced

All About Symbian: The latest Nseries, the Nokia N82, has been formally announced. The N82 features a 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and a Xenon flash, and assisted-GPS. The N82 boasts and impressive ray of connectivity options: quad-band GSM, WCDMA with HSDPA at 2100 MHz, WiFi and Bluetooth. The N82 is available immediately in key markets and sells for an approximate, pre-tax, unsubsidised price of 450 Euros.

The N82 features a 5 mega pixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics. This is the same camera module as that found in the N95. Instead of an LED based flash the N82 has a Xenon based flash. This is more powerful and should give better picture in low light situations. The camera is also reportedly much faster to start and to capture pictures.

Nokia describes it as the ‘best cameraphone on the market’ and a ‘creditable alternative to stand alone cameras’. The camera also supports shooting video (at VGA resolution at up to 30 fps). There is an on device editor for both still images and video (video editing more basic than N95).

The N82 will ship with Share Online pre-installed. This allows for one click upload to Flickr and other web services. There’s also the usual XpressPrint support which allows you to print photos via Bluetooth (to supported printers) or via USB (PictBridge compatible printers). You can also order prints online directly from your phone.

There’s an on board accelerometer to enable automatic rotation of the user interface. When you turn the phone from portrait to landscape orientation the UI will automatically change (user configurable). This is also used to automatically rotate photos to the correct orientation when you capture them.

The screen is a 2.4 inch QVGA screen with support for 16 million colours.

Nokia offers mobile photo printing

VNUNet: Nokia has launched a photo printing service to allow Nseries users to upload images and place an order directly from their smartphones.

The service requires the free Nokia XpressPrint application to be downloaded to the compatible devices.

Users can select the images in the phone’s gallery application and insert the postal address and other requested information. The order is then processed by CeWe Color and prints (or T-shirts, calendars, mugs and so on) are delivered to the address.

The service is available now and covers most of Europe. More European countries will be added.
