Toshiba introduces upscaling ZV series LCD TV’s

HD News: Having lost out to Blu-ray in the High Definition format war, Toshiba is fighting a rearguard action with some interesting upscaling technologies.

Resolution+, increases the sharpness of Standard Definition signals to what Toshiba claim is near HD quality.

Resolution+ sits alongside Toshiba’s other innovative upscaling technology, XDE, which has been designed to work with DVD’s. Resolution+ focuses solely on improving the sharpness of Standard Definition signals coming into the TV.

Early indications suggest that the ZV series does an excellent job with poorer quality sources such as Freeview, reducing the levels of ‘noise’ to minimal levels. However, Resolution+ looks more like an ‘Edge Enhancement’ technology which simply sharpens up the images rather than performing some form of modern day alchemy and turning SD pictures into HD.

CES 2009: Toshiba goes feature crazy

Trusted Reviews: As well as a completely new sleek and undeniably stylish design, the new Regza LCD TVs are also sporting a raft of completely new features. Of course the new Regzas will come with Resolution+, which is Toshiba’s latest upscaling technology, which reared its head back in August at IFA. Obviously a good upscaling system will make standard definition content look good on a Full HD screen, but Toshiba’s claims for Resolution+ went way beyond that.

Toshiba claimed that with resolution plus a 1,920 x 1,080 source can be upscaled to a 4k screen without any artefacts!

The new Regzas also feature something called InstaPort, which sets our to eliminate the annoying lag that occurs when switching between HDMI sources. With InstaPort, as soon as the TV is switched on it does all the handshaking with all the connected devices straight away, which means that when you switch between sources it should be instantaneous.

Toshiba’s new Regzas are also the first TVs to come equipped with Dolby Volume. Dolby Volume allows you to set a constant volume level regardless of source. This means that when a programme ends and the adverts start, you’re not blown off the sofa by the increase in volume.

1080p charted: viewing distance to screen size

EngadgetHD: 1080p has arguably been the buzzword of the year; at least in the HDTV world that is.

Advertisers makes it seem that everyone simply needs to have a 1080p display but we have finally found a chart to support our stance on the higher resolution.

Some people can take advantage of the extra lines of resolution but sometimes, it’s an unnecessary cost.

Simply locate your viewing distance on the right hand side and screen size on the bottom, connect the two lines and bam, your optimal screen resolution.

Everyone’s HDTV viewing situation is different and while 1080p might be slammed into your face while shopping for a new HDTV, it might not be necessary for you.
