Samsung to unveil 7mm thick TV at CES

NetworkWorld: Samsung Electronics plans to unveil a flat-panel TV that’s as thin as just 6.5-millimeters at this week’s International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The TV set, few details of which were immediately available, is between 6.5mm and 7mm across its width and has an LED (light emitting diode) backlight.

The Samsung TV stands at present to be the thinnest LCD TV yet demonstrated.

Until now that record was held by Philips, which unveiled an 8mm prototype LCD television at the IFA electronics show in Berlin last year. At the same event Sony took the wraps off a 9.9mm set that has already gone on sale and is the thinnest LCD TV available in retail stores.

CES begins on Thursday. Samsung has scheduled a news conference for Wednesday at which the TV set is expected to be first shown.

Firm expands LCD production

The Press Association: LG Display, the world’s second-largest LCD maker by sales after Samsung Electronics, plans to build a sixth-generation production line that will likely begin operations in the second quarter of 2009, the company said in a statement to South Korea’s stock exchange.

But the announcement drove down the company’s share price amid worries that the additional output will worsen an anticipated supply glut of the panels, used for TVs and computers.

“The LCD industry will experience oversupply from October this year,” said James Kim, an analyst at Lehman Brothers.

Samsung Electronics develops LCD using ordinary glass plate

The Hankyoreh: South Korea’s Samsung Electronics Co. said Wednesday that it has developed a liquid crystal display (LCD) screen using an ordinary glass plate, raising hopes that it could significantly reduce overall production costs of flat panel products.

The Soda-Lime thin film transistor LCD screen boasts an SXGA-level resolution, 1000:1 contrast ratio, and other high-end flat panel features for vivid motion pictures, the company said.

Samsung explained that the new LCD is based on an ordinary glass plate, unlike existing panels. Ordinary glass has not previously been used in producing LCDs since the silicon in it melts at temperatures higher than 300 Celsius degrees causing adverse chemical reactions.

Samsung adopted a new LCD production method under which panels can be made using a temperature lower than 300 Celsius degrees, clearing the technological hurdle for the use of cheaper glass in churning out flat panel products, officials said.
