Sylvania Blu-ray Disc Player going for $59.99

Übergizmo: Forget about the Sony PS3 being the most affordable Blu-ray player in the market – if you happen to scour Amazon, the Sylvania Blu-ray Disc Player breaks all records with its $59.99 price tag. Considering this has some pretty decent reviews, it is surely madness to turn it away at such a low price point – unless you want to get some gaming thrown into the mix of course, which is where the Sony PS3 comes in.

No release date or price for Sony PS3’s PlayTV

Product-Reviews: Just when us PlayStation 3 owners were about to look forward to the PVR functionality on our games consoles, we have just learnt that we will have to wait a while longer for this TV feature. The much anticipated PlayTV twin-tuner device that will connect to the Sony PS3 was first announced last year in Germany, and many thought that we would get our hands on the device on July 31st as it was showing up as a pre-order over at Amazon.co.uk. However; this has now been removed and there is no news as to when the release will be.A Sony spokesperson had this to say “We have yet to announce a release date and price for PlayTV, and do not comment on rumor or speculation.”

It seems that no matter where you look no one is giving the PlayTV a firm release date, it seems that these release date keep coming and going and nobody will give an answer as to why this is.

Sony talks up PS3 update

The Register: A Sony executive has left PS3 fans all a-quiver after promising to release a firmware update “soon” that will improve the console’s support for Blu-ray Disc interactivity features.

Don Eklund, VP of advanced technologies at Sony, reportedly made the promise at the recent HDTV DisplaySearch conference in California. Unfortunately, he didn’t say anything more specific about the release, leaving PS3 buffs to speculate about what new interactive features Sony might introduce to the console.

The Blu-ray Disc Association has already mandated that all Blu-ray players launched after 31 October must feature picture-in-picture video playback, so Sony could be prepping things to make sure any PS3s sold after that date are compliant.

Any Sony update will follow hot on the heels of an interactivity features update for HD DVDs, announced recently by Universal. Its release consisted mainly of online shopping features, such as merchandise or trailer downloads, and a function allowing users to share their favourite movie clips with friends directly from their player.

40GB Sony PS3 is official

I4U: Sony officially announces the rumored 40GB Sony PS3 console for Europe launching already next week on the 10th October 2007 at the new low price of €399.

There is almost no difference of the 40GB PS3 to the 60GB PS3. One big difference is though that the new PS3 is no longer backwards compatible with PS2 games.

“The introduction of the new PS3 has been the result of extensive research into the entertainment needs and preferences of the next generation of PS3 owners,” said David Reeves, President of SCEE. “It has allowed us to deliver an extremely advanced, yet incredibly affordable High Definition gaming and entertainment system, configured to the needs of the next generation of European PS3 owners. PS3 has always been the device of choice for the discerning gamer and entertainment seeker, and the new PS3 is more than ever the perfect High Definition entertainment system.

The 60GB PS3 will be now selling for 499 Euro as long there is stock available.

Sony turns to Taiwan to produce new entry-level PS3

HDTV UK: It seems those rumours relating to a new 40GB Playstation 3 might be true after news that Sony has turned to Taiwanese manufacturer, FoxConn, to make the entry-level version of the high-definition games console.

FoxConn is the same company that currently manufactures the Sony’s Playstation2 consoles – although it seems the existing 80GB model will continue to be made by ASUSTeK.

Previous speculation had stated that there would be a price cut of the 80GB version in line with the current 60GB model and that an entirely new beginners version would arrive.

Wii hits 1m UK sales in record time

Times Online: The Nintendo Wii has become the fastest selling video games console in British history after one million of the machines were sold 38 weeks after the device made its high street debut.

The Wii achieved the one million landmark in a shorter time than the Sony PlayStation 2, which, after a difficult launch in 2000, went on to become the world’s most successful console so far, selling more than 115 million units worldwide.

The Wii, designed to attract “non-core” gamers, is outselling both the struggling PlayStation 3 and Microsoft’s Xbox 360 by at least two-to-one.

Last month Nintendo announced that its first-quarter net profits soared more than five-fold, further vindicating the Japanese group’s declared policy of making video games for “people who don’t like video games”.

The company also sharply raised its full-year forecasts on soaring sales of the Wii and the continued success of its DS handheld machine.

Features remain unchanged from the 60GB model except for the removal of direct hardware compatibility with PS1 and PS2 games in order to save cost on the system.
