Hands on: Apple TV & YouTube

MacWorld UK: The long-awaited update for the Apple TV arrived yesterday, providing Apple’s television box with YouTube functionality built in.

Installing YouTube on the Apple TV couldn’t be easier. Simply click on the ‘Update’ option and wait for the download. It took roughly five minutes to download the update, and another couple of minutes for the Apple TV to restart.

Do this and you’ll find a new option marked ‘YouTube’ on the Apple TV menu. Click on it and you’ll be gazing over the following options: ‘Featured’, ‘Most Viewed’, ‘Most Recent’, ‘Top Rated’, ‘History’, ‘Search’ and ‘Log In’.

YouTube is an amazing addition to the Apple TV, one that changes the nature of the device completely. You certainly can’t complain about a lack of content for the device now – and it’s ability to sync up to your online account brings the community element of YouTube and all its video where it belongs, in your living room. We expect to update our review and rating of the Apple TV after we have had a more thorough test of the device.

Archos unveils three Generation 5 PMPs which play YouTube videos

Tech Digest: Archos has unveiled its new line of personal media players, dubbed Generation 5. It includes three new PMPs, the 405, 605 and 705, which for the first time will support Flash-based video from YouTube and other online video-sharing sites.

The three PMPs also have built-in Wi-Fi, to attract people keen to stream media around their homes, including films and music from their PCs, as well as surfing the Web.

The new players will also be able to connect to TVs using Archos’ DVR Station accessory, meaning users will be able to watch downloaded movies on their big screen.

Google grabs 17% of online video market

TG Daily: Internet analysis firm Comscore today said that Google has become the leading online video property with 1.2 billion video streams and 57.4 million unique people streaming videos in March.

The firm said that YouTube drove Google’s market share to 16.7%, reaching 53.5 million unique streamers and delivering 1.1 billion streams alone.

Yahoo came in second with 434 million streams, followed by Fox Interactive Media, which owns Myspace, with 421 million, Viacom with 260 million, Time Warner with 222 million and Microsoft with 151 million.

According to Comscore, 71.4% of U.S. Internet users streamed videos in March, with three out of ten users streaming from YouTube. Online viewers watched an average of 145 minutes of online video during the month; in total, more than 7 billion video streams were initiated by more than 126 million people in America alone, the research firm said.

“The CD is dead’ says EMI

MarketWatch: EMI Music Chairman Alain Levy recently told an audience at the London Business School that the CD is dead, saying music companies will no longer be able to sell CDs without offering “value-added” material.

“The CD as it is right now is dead,” Levy said, adding that 60% of consumers put CDs into home computers in order to transfer material to digital music players.
But there remains a place for physical media, Levy said.
“You’re not going to offer your mother-in-law iTunes downloads for Christmas,” he said. “But we have to be much more innovative in the way we sell physical content.”
Record companies will need to make CDs more attractive to the consumer, he said.
“By the beginning of next year, none of our content will come without any additional material,” Levy said.
CD sales accounted for more than 70% of total music sales in the first half of 2006, while digital music sales were around 11% of the total, according to music industry trade body the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry.
Levy said EMI is continuing to hold talks with Google on an advertising-revenue sharing partnership with the community video Web site YouTube.
EMI’s rivals, Warner Music Group Corp., Sony BMG – a joint venture between Sony Corp. (SNE) and Bertelsmann AG – and Universal Media have all signed content deals with YouTube.
“The terms they were offering weren’t acceptable,” Levy said, adding that EMI continues to be concerned about copyright issues.

YouTube for DivX fans

AV Zombie: DivX has launched its own online community for people who love to watch and download user-generated content.

Stage6Their new video Stage6 allows users watch and share DivX videos as well as interact with the people who made them.

Significantly, the video content of Stage6 can be downloaded and burnt to DVD, for playback in DivX compatible DVD players.

Content currently seems to consist primarily of music and anime, and video quality is consistently good.

YouTube – HDTV on the web?

Bit-Tech.net: Speaking at Tuesday’s Intel Developer Forum, Intel CEO Paul Otellini said that the inevitable next step for YouTube will be to distribute content in high definition.

Otellini explained the need for faster processing. A YouTube stream would have occupied the majority of a PC’s CPU time 5-10 years ago, he said. Today, it is a very small amount, allowing us to do many other things simultaneously.

He said that this year would see the true mainstreaming of HD, with the first sub-$1000 HD camcorders.

“We’re going to see HD content on YouTube in the future,” Paul told the audience.
